Despite its modest state of tourist development, there are plenty of scenic places worth visiting for their natural wildness, which may sometimes be a bit austere but are always clothed with lush vegetation.

This small town of 40,000 is the island’s capital. Most of its business life is focussed on the deepwater port where coasting craft from neighbouring islands and cruise liners berth. Recent work has restored the stone façades and arches of the old colonial buildings, which now
house both government offices and barrestaurants.

The shops are to be found in the two main roads back from the port, though the most colourful and local feel is to be found in the markets of vegetables and spices, meat and fish on Bay Street.
